Card Test Generator: Safe Answer

A card test generator for legitimate development work supplies synthetic payment data for a sandbox. It does not create real card numbers or CVV pairs. Use the test card numbers and test tokens published by your payment processor. Do not buy, sell, or test CVVs. Using stolen payment card data violates card network rules and federal law.

Prerequisites

  • Sandbox merchant account from your payment processor.
  • Test API keys and test credentials.
  • Written test plan that covers approvals, declines, errors, refunds, and 3D Secure.
  • Isolated test environment with no live customer data.
  • Access to the processor's official test card documentation.

Procedure

  1. Define the test scope. List each payment flow that needs coverage, such as authorization, capture, refund, and chargeback simulation.
  2. Open the processor sandbox documentation. Copy the published test card numbers and test tokens for each scenario.
  3. Configure the sandbox API keys. Confirm the environment is set to test mode before you run any transaction.
  4. Create test tokens in the sandbox. Use tokenization so raw card data never enters your application logs or database.
  5. Run the scenario matrix. Test successful charges, declined charges, expired cards, incorrect CVV responses, and 3D Secure challenges.
  6. Record results with synthetic IDs. Store only the test card label, response code, and timestamp.
  7. Purge test records. Remove test tokens and sandbox data when the test cycle ends.
  8. Review the test plan with compliance and engineering. Confirm that no live PANs or CVVs appear in test data, logs, or support tickets.

What Not to Do

Do not build a generator that outputs live PAN and CVV pairs. Do not run authorization tests against production endpoints with invented card data. Card testing attacks create unnecessary declines, fraud flags, and fees. Never store CVV data after authorization, even in a test system that uses real card data. Use synthetic sandbox data only.
