If a card was charged
- Call the card issuer. Ask for the fraud team. The number is on the back of the card.
- Dispute the charge in writing within 60 days of the statement date. That deadline comes from the Fair Credit Billing Act.

- File a report with the FTC and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
- Check the three credit bureaus for accounts you did not open.
What to do instead
Buying card data has no legal use. To accept payments, sign up with a registered payment processor. To spend without a bank account, use prepaid cards sold at retail. Both are legal and traceable.
